Application

We can see social penetration is used in The Lion King. When Simba, the main character, runs away from home after his father is killed, he meets Timon and Pumbaa. They Simba avoids talking about his past but ends up having too when someone from his past comes back into his life (click the picture to view video).

Orientation Stage

In this video, Timon and Pumbaa find Simba alone and decide o befriend him. They believe that having a lion on their side will help them in life. Simba refuses to tell him deep information about his past, but they tell him to forget about it and teach him a new way to look at life.

Effective Exchange

In this clip, the three characters are looking up at the stars, they are very close with one another now, but when Simba gives his outlook at what the stars are, Timon and Pumbaa laugh at high values. Simba gets upset with this because they are making fun of something important to him.

Exploratory Affective Stage

In this clip, we see the three of them singing a song called Hakuna Matata, Timon and Pumbaa's view of life. We see Simba grow throughout this song and see the way he starts to build a friendship.

Stable Exchange Stage

In this last clip, Simba returns to his home to see it is deserted. Timon and Pumbaa go along with him after finding out that Simba is a king of the land and comforts and supports him when they find out they need to fight Simba's uncle scar to claim the land back.
